English Football Headlines: Hannibal Banned for Spitting; City Boss Says 'Back Line Has to Improve'

In the latest English football developments, a notable player was handed a significant suspension, a head coach has pointed to a defender's errors to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline betterment after a chaotic victory.

1. Mejbri Given Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-match suspension and a financial fine for improper behaviour during a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body stated Mejbri faced a separate disciplinary panel following an incident of spitting in the direction of visiting supporters at the 67th mark during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.

A release read: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct during their Premier League game against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he acted in breach of the rules of the game and/or in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or unacceptable conduct by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 after a hearing. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published at a later date.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.

Maresca Points to Tosin's Mistakes to Make a Point

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is no an issue for his team, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent him from having a bad game during the defeat against Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that mentality played a part in the poor result. He made his case by criticising Tosin, the most experienced player in the lineup, after he produced a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.

“We always mention a lack of experience when we fail to win,” Maresca said. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning experienced players. I know that when we don’t win, people are constantly looking for the reason why, but I think why we lost to Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we just weren't good enough.”

Maresca continued, “Who was the most senior player for us in the match? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not good enough.”

Guardiola Says Defence 'Must Improve'

Pep Guardiola has insisted the champions have learnt from a midweek thriller against Fulham and the episode has now been forgotten. City held on for a 5-4 win in a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.

Coming after they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior game, it raised further doubts regarding if they are the defensive steel required to sustain a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” Guardiola said. “Good learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to learn from both good and bad in the good things and results and focus on the next one.”

“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We try to understand what happened, to not allow so many goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and five goals by Fulham it shows our sides, right? Therefore, we have we have done plenty of positive things. But the number of attempts did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So our ratio of chances conceded is too high. We have to improve.”

4. Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts

The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a contract that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

That has left Wilson free to prioritise negotiations with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's efforts are being treated with some importance.

“My first few days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s deal is much better than the one I was expecting,” he stated. “But it’s well known that we wishes to renew Tino’s deal and we wants to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are ongoing.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be missing Botman against the home game against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender expected to be sidelined for a further period.

Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton

West Ham head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to start for they face Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban for the red card he received Liverpool.

“It is behind us,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it will not happen again as he himself admitted the error. We discussed it internally. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”

He also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are 18th before Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he said. “It's a reality. We have to confront it. We're fighting for survival. We can't shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino

The Spanish midfielder may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward despite the club's usual strikers are fit again. The midfielder has been deployed as a makeshift number nine because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second during a 2-0 victory that maintained {their|
