British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
